The Best Collagen Powder for Healthy Moms

Sharing is caring!

This post on collagen powder for healthy moms is sponsored by Ancient Nutrition.

Mom life isn’t easy. At times we seem to subsist on very little sleep, eating whatever our kids leave behind, dreaming of the day we can enjoy a hot shower and an actual skin routine. Luckily I’ve discovered the best collagen powder for healthy moms – the secret to looking and feeling my best so I can stay on top of my mom game!

I started taking collagen a few years ago when I learned how beneficial it is, especially as I get older. I even continued adding collagen to my coffee daily while I was pregnant and breastfeeding (after consulting with my healthcare professional, of course), because I wanted to be sure my body remained as healthy as possible. Since then I’ve done even more research on the importance of collagen and I’m going to tell you everything you need to know!

What is collagen?

Simply put, collagen is the most abundant protein in the human body. It can be thought of as the glue that holds everything together. Collagen is responsible for building your bones, skin, muscles, tendons, and ligaments, and can also be found in many other parts of your body – even your hair!

Why take collagen powder?

While our bodies naturally produce collagen, the amount we produce naturally declines as we get older. The quality of collagen our bodies make can also decline as well. We can see the effects of reduced collagen with normal aging:

  • loose skin
  • dull nails
  • lackluster hair
  • joint discomfort

Moms’ bodies already have it hard – we don’t need to add any of these to the normal decrease in collagen! By adding collagen to your diet daily, you can keep optimal levels of collagen in your body for optimal health.

What is the best collagen powder?

That’s what we all want to know, right? Which collagen powder do I believe is best and how do I take it?

From all the research I’ve done, the best collagen powder I’ve found is Ancient Nutrition Multi Collagen Powder. Let me tell you why I chose it over all the others.

Ancient Nutrition Multi Collagen Powder combines 5 types of collagen from 4 food-based sources in one. Many other collagen powders are single-collagen, such as using only bovine collagen or marine collagen. Multi Collagen Powder is made with chicken, beef, fish, and eggshell membrane to include the 5 main collagen types: I, II, III, V, and X.

(Here comes a little bit of science nerd stuff, but I think it’s important for you to know!)

Types of Collagen

Type I collagen is the strongest type and is made of densely packed fibers. It helps to form our skin, bones, tendons, cartilage, corneas, teeth, blood vessel walls and other connective tissues. It accounts for 90% of our body’s collagen. Type I collagen can be found in supplements featuring bovine or fish collagen.

Type II collagen is made of more loosely packed fibers and found in cartilage, the connective tissue which cushions your joints. Cartilage is also found in your ears, nose, and other parts of your body. Collagen supplements formed from chicken collagen are a great source of type II collagen.

Type III collagen supports the structure of our skin, muscles, organs, and arteries. It is found in the intestines, aids in blood clotting, and can enhance exercise performance. It is found in the same sources as type I collagen.

Type V collagen can be found in the cornea, in layers of skin, hair, and – most importantly for moms – in the tissue of the placenta. Type V collagen also helps to form cell surfaces and hair. It co-exists with type II collagen in joint cartilage, while supporting healthy collagen fibers of type II collagen.

Type X collagen is a protein typically present in normal joint cartilage and is generally found in eggshell membrane collagen.

Is Ancient Nutrition Collagen Good?

That’s a question I’ve been asked so many times that I just had to include it here. And my answer is YES, it is good! It’s what I consider the best collagen powder available, and I use it daily!

All those science facts aside, here’s why I recommend Ancient Nutrition collagen –

  • It’s a high-quality blend of bovine, chicken, fish and eggshell collagen peptides
  • It’s non-GMO
  • It’s made with pasture-raised, cage-free, and cruelty-free sources (chicken and eggs sourced exclusively from Midwest US farms, pasture-raised cows from South America and shellfish-free fish collagen derived from wild, cold water fish sustainably harvested in North America)
  • It’s paleo, gluten free, made without dairy and nuts
  • It’s keto-friendly, with 9 grams of protein, 0 carbs, and 0 fat per serving – providing 10.2 grams of collagen and only 35 calories
  • It blends easily in my coffee!

In all honesty, I refuse to try (or recommend) any supplement or product until I have thoroughly researched it and have tried it for myself extensively. With any health-related product, I’m even more hesitant. I want to make sure anything I bring into my home is going to be the very best quality for myself and my family!

With the quality I’ve found in Ancient Nutrition Multi Collagen Powder, it is one that I am confident in recommending to my family and friends. I’ve shared other products from Ancient Nutrition in the past, and this is just another that I’ve found that I love. They actually make a few different varieties, but I’m really digging the vanilla flavor right now!

How do you take collagen powder?

Hands down, my favorite way to add collagen to my diet is in my coffee. Just a little scoop right along with my creamer (yes, creamer is my weakness) and it blends right in. If you have an electric frother, the powder will dissolve even faster – but it dissolves pretty easily just with a spoon.

The vanilla flavored collagen powder has a pretty mild taste to me, but it’s enough that I prefer using it to mix in with my coffee. I think it’s a pretty natural tasting flavor too, nothing weird and no strange aftertaste.

Because it’s such a light vanilla flavor, you can add it to other beverages or foods if you like. Mix it in with a cup of water, stir it in with your oatmeal or yogurt, or cook it up in your next batch of pancakes! The collagen isn’t harmed with cooking and it will taste so good. If you aren’t a vanilla fan, no problem, they have a variety of flavors to choose from.

More on collagen for moms

Before you run off after your kids, there are a few last things I want you to know about collagen powder.

You aren’t going to see results immediately. Sorry, mama, it doesn’t work that way. Everyone’s body is different, but you may need to stick with it to really see and feel the benefits.

Think about how long it takes for your hair and nails to grow. With collagen being an important part of those processes, you can see how it can take a while. So trust me and don’t quit! (I’ve had times where I stopped taking collagen before – I don’t recommend that.)

It doesn’t matter so much if you put it in your coffee first thing in the morning or add it to your dinner. Just make sure to get it in daily.

And just because we see those effects of normal aging when we get older, it doesn’t mean you should wait until you’re “old” to start supplementing with collagen! Around 25 years of age is when collagen production naturally begins to decline. So grab your collagen and get started NOW.

And finally… get regular exercise. Drink your water. Eat lots of fruits and veggies and protein. Get some sleep when your kids will let you. And love yourself!
