Choosing a Color Palette

The first step in creating a shark-themed bedroom is selecting the right color palette. Think ocean-inspired colors that evoke the serene and mysterious underwater world.

Shades of blue are a must—consider a soft navy, teal, and aqua to mimic the depths of the ocean. You can’t really go wrong whether you choose white walls, blue walls, or anything in between.

You can also use accents of white, gray, and sandy beige to balance the darker hues and create a sense of openness.

For a pop of color, try adding bright coral or seaweed green accents. These color options not only look fantastic but also stimulate a sense of calm and adventure.

When I decorated my son’s shark bedroom, I chose a combination of light gray walls with darker blue accent on one wall and white furniture. This mix made the room feel spacious and inviting, perfect for a little explorer.

DIY board and batten wall

I went with Sherwin-Williams Repose Gray, since it’s a pretty popular neutral color. I love that it gives a calming feeling to the room. Not too light, not too dark. I used Sherwin-Williams Naval on the board and batten half wall behind his bed.

Naval seemed like the perfect shade of blue for a shark room – right??

Wall Paint and Murals

Transforming the walls can make a big impact on the overall theme. Consider shark-themed wall art and decals. These are easy to apply and remove, making them perfect for updating the room as your child grows.

You can find removable wall decals with various shark designs or even ocean mural wallpapers that feature sharks, fish, and other sea creatures.

For a personal touch, you might want to try some DIY painting tips. A simple but effective idea is to paint a wave border around the room. If you’re feeling more adventurous, you can create an entire underwater scene with colorful fish and coral.

painting shark tooth stencil on wall

In my son’s room, I made a shark tooth stencil to paint a pattern on one of his walls. I couldn’t find one that matched what I was looking for, so I just used a mylar sheet and an X-Acto knife and made my own!

I used “Shark Fin” gray Behr paint for the shark teeth – the perfect color choice if you ask me. This wall was one of my favorite things, and it created an immersive environment that he absolutely loved.

Shark Bedding and Linens

Bedding is another essential element in setting the theme. Shark-printed bedding sets can be the focal point of the room. Look for comforter sets that include matching pillowcases and sheets. Adding a few throw pillows and blankets with ocean patterns can enhance the look and add comfort.

You can find shark themed bedding for a child’s room almost anywhere. I found a great shark-themed comforter set from Pottery Barn Kids that included a quilt and shams, organic sheets and pillowcases all covered in fun shark designs. My son loves snuggling under his shark blanket, and it ties the whole room together perfectly.

For a more budget friendly option, check out this bedding set from Target.

And if you are looking for bedding to fit a crib mattress, this nautical crib sheet set is too cute to pass up!

Nautical Theme Furniture and Storage

When it comes to furniture, consider pieces that complement the shark theme. There are some really fantastic options out there!

I love this twin bed shaped like a boat. I wish I had seen this when my son was younger because that storage is priceless!

For storage, look for baskets with shark designs – or you may want to consider DIY options where you can paint or decorate plain wooden storage bins with shark motifs.

We opted for a simple white and gray furniture (like the color of gray sharks) rather than add shark themed furniture. We wanted to keep things easy in case of a color change decision later, or in case my son suddenly decided he hated sharks and wanted a different themed room. (But for the record – he still loves sharks 4 years later!)

Shark Decor, Wall Art, Lighting and Accessories

Lighting or an exciting art piece can be the perfect addition to your shark-themed bedroom.

Shark-shaped night lights are not only functional but also add a cute decorative element.

Consider adding ocean projector lights that create a soothing, underwater effect on the ceiling. My kids love using projector lights to help them fall asleep!

There are some really cool shark theme wall prints out there to fit pretty much any budget. These unframed art prints can be pinned to the wall or you can frame them yourself (look for cheap used frames at thrift stores).

These canvas prints come ready to hang. And they are educational too!

If you want something more personalized, you can custom order a decal with your child’s first initial and name on it.

Other accessories to consider include shark-themed rugs and shark curtains. These items can tie the room together and provide additional layers of the theme.

This starfish rug adds to the nautical vibe without being “too much” with the shark decor. Plus it’s pretty neutral, which means it would be a good fit with many different color palettes!

In our project, we included a shark lamp, a fabric shark head that hung over his bead, hanging orange jellyfish made from paper lanterns and crepe paper (that was my favorite and I found it on Etsy – similar to this one!), and some small nautical themed touches like a small wooden boat and lotion caddy. (None of these are available online anymore, but you can find lots out there!)

DIY Projects and Personal Touches

Adding DIY projects can make the room feel even more special. Creating a shark mobile to hang over the bed or a DIY shark wall art using canvas and paint can be fun and creative activities. Crafting shark-themed picture frames or decorating storage bins can also personalize the space.

The paper jellyfish I linked above could be a fun project, and would actually be quite easy to recreate. As an accent piece, these look great when made with the brightest colors – such as orange like mine or even a lime green.

Or you could make it interesting and use a range of colors to make a whole school of floating jellyfish around your kids room!

Safety and Practicality

While creating a fun and exciting space, it’s crucial to keep safety and practicality in mind.

  • Make sure to secure furniture to walls to prevent tipping.
  • Choose non-toxic paint and materials to ensure a healthy environment for your child.
  • Ensure that lighting is child-safe and easily accessible.

We made sure all the furniture in my son’s room was securely fastened to the wall, especially the taller pieces. This gave us peace of mind knowing his room was both fun and safe – he’s a climber!
