Easy Roasted Garlic Mashed Potatoes Recipe
Today I want to share our Easy Roasted Garlic Mashed Potatoes with you! This is an incredibly simple recipe that your entire family will enjoy! Our kids absolutely love these garlic mashed potatoes.
You can alter your recipe as needed for the size of your family. Our recipe serves 5 and a bit leftover for the next day depending on how ravenous the kids are feeling. This is our favorite side to add to our Roast Beef and Yorkshire Pudding and for our Turkey Dinner.
Roasted Garlic Mashed Potatoes Ingredients
- 6 large red potatoes
- 1 clove of garlic
- 3 tbsp butter
- 1/4-1/2 cup milk
- salt
- pepper
- Montreal steak spice or garlic pepper **Optional**
Roasted Garlic Mashed Potatoes Supplies
- cutting board
- knife
- large pot
- spoon
- potato masher
- aluminum foil
Prepare the Garlic for Roasting
Take one whole garlic and cut in half along the thickest part of the bulb. Add a bit of butter in between the top and bottom halves.
Wrap in aluminum foil with 2 layers and bake in over at 400°F for approximately 20-30 minutes.
I usually try to put it on a tray of something else that I already have in the oven just in case it decides to leak.
Wash and Chop Potatoes
I love to use red potatoes because they have great skin on them with a nice flavor. There are so many nutrients in potato peels, therefore, we do not peel them which also speeds up the process. The flavor will shock you!
Chopping your potatoes into very small pieces will cut the cooking time down which also speeds up the whole process.
I’m not usually in a rush to make these because we serve alongside some bigger dish that usually takes an hour minimum.
Bring to a boil and then cook on medium-high heat, continuing to stir and watch them so they don’t boil over.
Check doneness by poking with a fork. Once soft, drain water and cover with a lid.

Add the Roasted Garlic
The smell that is spreading throughout your home right now is absolutely amazing. You might get a few neighbors trying to sneak over for supper because it smells that good!
To check if your garlic is done, do so by just giving it a squeeze with oven mitts. If it is soft it should be done. Unwrap and let cool so that you do not get burnt. Once it is cool enough to touch, squeeze into drained mashed potatoes pot.
Mash the Potatoes
Now add milk and butter and begin to mash the potatoes and cream the roasted garlic into the mixture. You will notice the red skins give the mashed potatoes a bit of color so they don’t look quite so blah on the dinner table.
I really love to switch it up sometimes so when I add my salt and pepper I also might add a bit more flavor. Montreal steak spice is incredible with mashed potatoes, and is a definite must-try.
Another great spice I love to add is garlic pepper! Let me know if you try it and love it!
Enjoy your Roasted Garlic Mashed Potatoes alongside your favorite main course!
