Dye-Free Christmas Candy: Candy Canes, Chocolates & Stocking Stuffers

Sharing is caring!

Finding Christmas candy without artificial food dyes can feel like a scavenger hunt. Between the candy canes, stocking stuffers, and all those brightly colored holiday treats, there’s a whole lot of Red 40 hiding in the Christmas candy aisle!

Our family has avoided artificial food dyes for several years now, so I’ve gotten pretty good at checking ingredient labels. And believe me, just because something is red and green doesn’t mean it needs artificial coloring!

I’ve put together this guide to help you find dye-free Christmas candy that your kids can still get excited about, including candy canes, chocolates, peppermints, and fun stocking stuffers.

This list focuses on products made without artificial food dyes, based on manufacturer ingredient information. I haven’t personally tested every candy on this list, and ingredients can change, so always double-check the packaging before purchasing!

Best Dye-Free Christmas Candy

Whether you’re filling stockings, putting together Christmas treat bags for school, or just trying to keep a candy dish stocked for the holidays, there are more options than you might think.

I’m going to do my best to keep working links here for you to easily access the candies listed. These are seasonal products though, which means the links may not be active in the summer (or when Christmas items aren’t yet available in stores). If you notice anything funky with the links, please do let me know to fix it!

Dye-Free Candy Canes and Peppermints

Let’s start with the most obvious Christmas candy. Because it wouldn’t quite feel like Christmas without a candy cane hanging from the tree!

YumEarth Organic Peppermint Candy Canes

If you're looking for traditional red-and-white peppermint candy canes without Red 40, these are a great place to start. These are the full size candy canes -- the size my family would hang on the Christmas tree and in our stockings.

YumEarth makes its candy canes with organic cane sugar, brown rice syrup, peppermint flavor, and colors from fruit and vegetable concentrates.

They look festive, taste like classic peppermint candy canes, and can be used for just about anything you'd use regular candy canes for. Hang them on the tree, tuck them into stockings, or stick one in a mug of hot chocolate.

They're also made without the nine major food allergens, which is especially helpful when you're shopping for kids with food restrictions.

YumEarth Organic Holiday Mini Candy Canes

Sometimes a full-size candy cane is just more than you need, especially when you're putting together treats for a whole classroom.

These mini versions are perfect for Christmas goodie bags, stocking stuffers, and attaching to wrapped presents. I also love the idea of including them with a homemade hot chocolate gift.

Same festive red-and-white look, without the artificial food coloring!

365 by Whole Foods Market Organic Mini Candy Canes

Here's another option for mini candy canes that are dye-free! I grabbed these last year to send in for my son's class holiday party at school. Actually I think I sent in enough for his class and kept the rest of the box home for my own little treat. Shhhh!

These use vegetable juice for color, with none of the veggie taste. They were a hit!

Yumearth Holiday Peppermint Puffs

You know those soft peppermint candies that practically melt in your mouth? That's what these are!

If you love keeping a bowl of Christmas candy out for guests, these would be a great option. They have that classic peppermint flavor and festive coloring without artificial dyes.

They're also nice for adding to Christmas treat bags or including in a little gift basket with hot cocoa and a Christmas mug.

Dye-Free Christmas Chocolates

Now we’re talking! Because while I appreciate a good candy cane, 9 times out of 10 I’m going to reach for the chocolate first.

UNREAL Milk Chocolate Gems, Red and Green Holiday Edition

If your family loves M&M's, take a look at these!

UNREAL makes colorful candy-coated milk chocolate gems without artificial food dyes. Instead of synthetic coloring, the candy shells get their colors from ingredients like turmeric, beet juice, and spirulina.

You can eat them straight from the bag, of course, but they'd also be perfect for making Christmas cookies or a holiday snack mix.

I've bought the regular UNREAL candies -- the multi-colored ones -- and they are great. I didn't even realize until now that they make red and green bags for the holidays. These are so perfectly festive!

Yumearth Holiday Chocolate Snowman

How cute is a little chocolate snowman peeking out of a Christmas stocking?

YumEarth makes this hollow chocolate snowman using dairy-free chocolate made with rice milk, so it's a fun option for kids who can't have traditional milk chocolate.

It's also made without artificial food dyes, and the cocoa is Fair Trade Certified. I love that there's an actual Christmas-shaped candy option for families with dietary restrictions, instead of having to make do with the same treats they eat all year.

And let's face it, sometimes a chocolate snowman is just more exciting than another handful of individually wrapped candies!

Lindt LINDOR Holiday Assorted Chocolate Candy Truffles

These might be the ones I'd have the hardest time sharing!

If you love rich, creamy chocolate, LINDOR truffles are such a good Christmas treat. They have a smooth chocolate shell with that soft, melt-in-your-mouth center, and they come individually wrapped in pretty little packages.

The classic milk chocolate truffles are especially festive in their red wrappers, and Lindt also offers holiday gift boxes and assorted truffle bags.

The milk chocolate and classic assorted varieties I checked don't list artificial food dyes, making them a nice option for filling stockings, adding to gift baskets, or keeping a candy dish stocked for the grown-ups.

One thing to know: Some LINDOR varieties contain artificial flavors, so check the ingredient list if your family avoids those as well.

GHIRARDELLI Limited Edition Holiday Chocolate Snowmen Assortment

Now THESE are the kind of chocolate treats I love finding in a Christmas candy bowl!

Ghirardelli's holiday snowman assortment includes individually wrapped chocolate snowmen in flavors like Milk Chocolate Caramel, Dark Chocolate Sea Salt Caramel, and Peppermint Bark.

You get a little variety without having to buy several different bags, and the snowman shapes make them feel extra festive.

Even better, the ingredient list for this assortment uses fruit and vegetable juices and curcumin for coloring rather than artificial food dyes.

These would be perfect for Christmas stockings, holiday party favors, or a cute candy dish on the kitchen counter. Just make sure you're getting the actual snowman assortment, since ingredients can vary between Ghirardelli products.

Dye-Free Christmas Stocking Stuffers

Not every Christmas candy needs to be peppermint-flavored or shaped like Santa. Sometimes you just need a few fun treats that fit inside a stocking!

Kinder Joy Holiday Eggs

If your kids love candy AND little surprises, Kinder Joy Eggs are a fun stocking stuffer!

Each egg has two sides. One contains a creamy chocolatey treat with little crispy wafer bites, and the other has a surprise toy. Basically, you're getting candy and a tiny Christmas present all in one!

Kinder even releases special holiday versions with Christmas-themed toys, so keep an eye out for those when you're shopping. Even the non-holiday themed ones are always a hit around here.

The Kinder Joy ingredient list doesn't include artificial food dyes, but it does contain artificial flavors. Be sure to check the specific holiday package before purchasing to be sure ingredients haven't changed.

JOYRIDE Sour Strips Variety Pack

If your kids are more interested in sour gummies and fruity candy than chocolate, take a look at JOYRIDE!

They have all sorts of fun options, including sour strips and gummy candies, without artificial food dyes. They also skip artificial sweeteners, flavors, and preservatives, which is a nice bonus if your family is trying to avoid those ingredients too.

Some JOYRIDE candies come in seasonal or holiday-themed packaging, so they're worth checking when you're putting together Christmas stockings or treat bags. I can't find any available online right now, but I'll update later when they can be linked!

And I particularly like that these are candies older kids and teens (and moms) might actually get excited about. Not every stocking needs to be filled with peppermint and chocolate Santas!

YumEarth Organic Giggles Chewy Candy

For kids who love fruity candy, these are worth adding to your shopping list.

YumEarth Giggles come in flavors like strawberry, grape, lemon, orange, and green apple. They have colorful candy shells made without artificial food dyes.

They're a fun option when your child wants something a little closer to the colorful candies their friends are eating.

And because they aren't Christmas-specific, you can find ways to use them throughout the year for birthday parties, Easter baskets, and other celebrations.

Dye-Free Advent Calendars

YumEarth Holiday Organic 12 Day Advent Calendar

Instead of the usual tiny chocolates, YumEarth fills its 12-day calendar with individually packaged fruity candies, including Sour Littles, Fruit Snacks, and Chewys.

Everything is made without artificial food dyes, and the candies are vegan and formulated without the nine major allergens.

I especially love this idea for kids who can't eat the candy in traditional Advent calendars. They still get the excitement of opening a new surprise each day, without Mom having to replace the candy behind every little door!

Just remember that this is a 12-day calendar, not a full 24-day countdown.

How to Find Christmas Candy Without Artificial Dyes

I’ve learned that the front of the package doesn’t always tell you what you need to know.

A candy might be labeled organic, natural, or made with real fruit, but I still check the actual ingredients before buying it.

When you’re shopping for dye-free Christmas candy, look for artificial colors such as:

  • Red 40
  • Yellow 5 and Yellow 6
  • Blue 1 and Blue 2
  • Green 3
  • Artificial color lakes, such as Red 40 Lake

You’ll also see candies colored with ingredients like beet juice, turmeric, spirulina, and fruit or vegetable concentrates. These aren’t the same as synthetic food dyes.

And remember, artificial dyes aren’t necessarily the only ingredients your family may need to avoid. We also check for certain preservatives and other additives (we avoid artificial flavors, sweeteners, and vanillin), depending on the product.

Most of the products I’ve listed here can be found at your local grocery stores or superstores like Target, Walmart, Costco, Sam’s Club, etc. But to make it easy, you can click through my links and add to your next order!

One more important thing: Dye-free does not automatically mean organic, sugar-free, preservative-free, or allergy-safe. Those are separate considerations!

Easy Ideas for Dye-Free Christmas Treat Bags

Once you’ve found a few candy options that work for your family, putting together Christmas treat bags is pretty simple.

Here are a few fun combinations:

  • Hot cocoa gift bags: A mini candy cane, a packet of hot chocolate with ingredients you’ve checked, and a cute Christmas mug.
  • Classroom Christmas favors: Individually wrapped dye-free candies with a festive gift tag. Check school allergy policies first.
  • Christmas movie night treats: Popcorn, dye-free chocolate gems, and a few peppermint candies.
  • Stocking stuffers: A mix of fruity candies, candy canes, and small chocolates.
  • Holiday baking kits: Dye-free chocolate gems, cookie mix, and Christmas cookie cutters.

You don’t have to buy a dozen different kinds of candy to make Christmas special. A few treats that work for your family are plenty!

Frequently Asked Questions About Dye-Free Christmas Candy

Are there candy canes without Red 40?

Yes! YumEarth Organic Candy Canes and Hammond’s Organic Mint Candy Canes are two options made without synthetic Red 40 coloring. Always confirm the exact product and ingredients before purchasing.

Is all organic Christmas candy dye-free?

Certified organic products cannot use the usual synthetic FD&C food dyes in organic formulations, but you should still read ingredient labels, especially if your family avoids other additives or has food allergies.

Are all Christmas chocolates dye-free?

No. Some chocolate candies have colorful coatings, sprinkles, or decorative pieces containing artificial food dyes. Plain chocolate is often easier to shop for, but check each product’s ingredients.

Where can I buy dye-free Christmas candy?

Some options can be found through online retailers like Amazon/Whole Foods, Target, Walmart, and Thrive Market. You can also order directly from manufacturers such as YumEarth, Hammond’s, and No Whey Foods.

Local availability varies, and seasonal candy can sell out as Christmas approaches.

Is dye-free candy healthier than regular candy?

Not necessarily. Candy without artificial food dyes can still contain plenty of sugar. For our family, choosing dye-free treats is about avoiding specific ingredients, not trying to turn Christmas candy into health food.

Christmas Can Still Be Sweet Without Artificial Food Dyes

When we first started removing artificial dyes from our family’s diet, holidays were one of the things I worried about. I didn’t want my kids to feel like they were missing out on all the fun treats and traditions.

But I’ve learned that we don’t have to give up those things. Sometimes we just need to find a different version.

If you’re new to avoiding food dyes, you can also read our family’s story about why we removed artificial food dyes.

And if you’ve found a dye-free Christmas candy your family loves, tell me about it in the comments! I’m always looking for more options to add to our list.
