Our Back to School Routine for a Successful Year
Having a back to school routine can be super helpful in keeping both parents and kids on track. A routine can help to make mornings predictable and less hectic, as well as manage after school expectations. Here is our family’s back to school routine that we use to have a successful school year!

Wake Up and Wash Up
My kids use a white noise machine at night to help them sleep. It is set on a timer so that it wakes them up at the same time each day. Waking at the same time helps to keep their bodies on a predictable schedule for easier wake-ups and sleep.
As soon as they wake, they go potty and wash their face. This helps to get them out of that sleepy feeling so the rest of the morning goes smoothly.
Our washing up routines have helped the kids develop healthy habits to be clean throughout the rest of the day. When they are at school or away from home, they love to use Yipes! Wipes to clean up their face and hands.
Yipes! Face and Hand Wipes are 99% plant-derived and 98% water with no harsh ingredients. Hypoallergenic and dermatologist tested, they contain no parabens, phthalates, or petrolatum – making them soft and gentle for kids’ skin. They are also compostable, which we love!
I keep a few of the individually wrapped wet wipes in the kids’ backpacks. They are easy for the kids to open and use on their own, helping them to feel confident about being independent and responsible for their healthy habits.
Getting Dressed
One of the biggest tips I can give for a great back to school routine is to plan outfits the night before. Some parents go as far as to choose outfits for the whole week, but picking the next day’s outfit before bed works fine for us.
Not only do we choose the outfit, but we go ahead and set out any accessories (hair clips or headbands for Aren) as well as socks and shoes. That way there is no room for forgetting in the morning!
My kids have been wearing Stride Rite shoes for years, and Rowen loves his new SRTech Winslow Sneaker – in his favorite color, of course!
I love that they are machine washable (yes, really) and are made with anti-microbial linings to help reduce that stinky foot odor. They also have toe cap reinforcement and help to give a firm feeling of footing to help prevent stumbles. That’s important when you have a boy who is always running and jumping somewhere!
Vitamins and Supplements
After the kids are dressed and have eaten breakfast, we make sure to take our daily vitamins and supplements.
This year, we’ve started taking a daily supplement to help support a healthy immune system response. Standard Process is a leader in making whole food-based supplements, and has developed the new SP Children’s Immune chewable supplement for kids 4 and up.
SP Children’s Immune offers an excellent source of vitamin D, zinc, vitamin C, and elderberry. It is gluten-free, soy-free, and has no high fructose corn syrup. My chiropractor has recommended this line of supplements to me before, so I know they are amazing quality!
With a combination of good sleep, adequate daily exercise, and getting plenty of nutrients daily, we are doing what we can to prevent those illnesses that seem to pop up early in the school year!
Relax and Have Fun
That’s right – we make sure to plan fun time in our day too!
After keeping it together in school all day, I know my kids need to get their wiggles out. We go outside and play as much as we can, but I make sure to keep plenty of inside activities ready for them too.
The Heroes of Goo Jit Zu are the gooiest, stretchiest toys and my kids loveee them! They can stretch up to three times their size, and always come back to their original shape. They also have a one-time burst experience when the kids crush their core and activate their “Goo-formation” and release their inner power!
Rowen especially loves squeezing and stretching his action figure, as that is one of his favorite ways to get sensory input. It’s the perfect toy to allow him to be super tactile without making a mess!
Have a Great School Year!
Hopefully our back to school routine helps you to create your own routine so you will have an awesome year!
If possible, make a visual schedule for your kids with pictures of them doing each part of their morning and bedtime routines. This will help to ensure that they complete their tasks – with as little help or reminders from you as possible!
Good luck and stay healthy!
